Frequently Asked Questions

I think I might want a site. What do I do next?

Phone us on 020 8749 9229/07921 142084 for a free no obligation chat. I work from home so don't mind being called in the evening. If you prefer, you can email us at annie@digitalplot.co.uk

Is it better to have a .co.uk or a .com domain name?

It's your choice really. Dot com names are considered global domain names and are the names of choice for individuals and businesses who have a global focus. Dot co.uk names indicate a UK bias and are used by people who do not need a global identity and prefer to be associated with the UK.

How long does it take to design a website?

If we have all the information we need (text, photographs, graphics etc.) we should be able to produce your website within one week, depending our workload. However, clients usually want time to review their site, and it can take time to gather the content. A more typical timescale would be two to three weeks.

Can I update my website myself?

Yes, we can design sites that are updatable by the owner. This means that the site is linked up to a Content Management System (CMS). A CMS adds more to the cost of your site, and requires some computing ability. We also have a simpler option where we place an updatable panel on any page that you might want to update. If you only plan a few updates a year, It is usually much quicker and more cost effective for us to do the updating for you. All you need to do is email us your updates, and will do the work quickly and efficiently.

I already have a domain name and hosting arranged - can you still design a website for me?

We prefer to use our own hosting company, as we know the systems involved. If you already have hosting arranged, transfer your domain to our host company. Our hosting fees are very competitive - so you may find you are better off using our hosting service anyway.

Can I really have an unlimited amount of text on each page?

Yes. Limiting the amount of text just doesn't make sense on the internet. However, we recommend that you don't put more than 1000 words on a page unless there is a very good reason as it may affect download time of the page.

How do I give you the text and the pictures?

We need both the text and the pictures in electronic form. For text, the easiest way is to send it as an email attachment or in the body of an email. If you have access to a scanner, you can also email the pictures as an attachment. If you can't scan the pictures yourself, we can do it for you for a small charge but if you send sentimental material, please be aware that even though we will take expert care of it, we cannot guarantee the postal system.

Can you supply suitable pictures for me?

If you tell us what you want, we will search for suitable drawings or photos that we buy from royalty free image libraries at very reasonable costs...

Can you help with the text?

I don't write the text for you, but am happy to give you feedback on what you've written, if you wish. Also, I can recommend a professional copywriter, if you like. Sometimes an outside eye can spot details you've missed or haven't made clear.

Do you guarantee that my site will always be available?

The Internet sometimes develops faults, so no web hosting service guarantees 100% uptime. However I do buy webspace from an extremely efficient company that provides an excellent level of service on very fast servers. We use them ourselves and recommend them with confidence.

Do I have to pay in advance for you to build my site?

I do ask you to pay 40% of the agreed fee when you are satisfied with the draft design of the site. I will then build your site and put it on a test location for you to see. You only pay when you are satisfied. Your site will go live as soon as I have received either the second 40% payment or the total amount, whichever we agree.
